Essay
Introduction

When the 1960 baseball season started in New York, there was much to say about what was expected of the New York Yankees. Even the players themselves knew that they had to do better. "I think we got a good chance to win this year, much depends on our two young pitchers, the right handed Jim Coates and left handed Bill Short. If they come through we could make it", said Yogi Berra. The Yankees had just finished from probably one of their worst baseball seasons.Yogi being a Yankees player himself had an idea of what his team needed to improve on for the 1960 season. The Yankees had the ability to win, they had great players and with more practice they could win. However, it wasnt as easy as just more practice. The Yankees overcame many difficulties during the 1960 season and were the best major league team, but lost the world series.

As the 1960 season contract signing began for the Yankees, there were multiple things that some Yankee players disagreed with on their contract.
Mickey Mantle, the allstar center fielder was one of them. This outfielder had problems with the salary cut that was stated in his contract. He knew the reason for his salry cut, but did not expect the New York Yankees to cut $15,000 from his original $75,000 salary. The $15,000 salary cut was based upon his performance in 1959. It was that year when Mantle himself admitted his performance was not good, but not bad enough for a dramatic salary cut. Instead of signing the contract, this player left it blank and sent it back to the yankees office. He would not sign for something he did not agree with.

With a new season starting, the Yankees had the oppurtunity to leave the loss of 1959 and start with a clean page. The difficulties from before were over, but those difficulties brought new ones in 1960. the yankees overcame many of these difficulties and were the best major league team, but lost the world series. The Yankees had great players who were capable of winning. They were on top of their game for the first couple of plays and made it to the world series where they consistently kept crushing the Pirates, but one pitch was all it took to change that.

As the 1960 baseball season started so did contract signing for the yankees, but something so simple as signing a paper turned into a big difficulty. one of the reasons was Mickey Mantle. This allstar outfielder disagreed with what he was going to sign for. In the contract it stated that his salry was cut about $13,000 from his original $75,000. This cut was based on Mantle's performance in 1959. Mantle admitted that his performance was not very good, but it was not bad enough for such a dramatic pay cut. Instead of signing the contract this Yankee player left it blank and sent it back to the yankees office. The delay in signing the contract kept Mickey from training had started without him.. However, Mickey was not the only one recieving a pay cut. Bob Turley recieved a cut of $4,000 from his salary.
This however did not get Turley angry. Bob knew that he deserved this cut because of his performance in 1959. Maantle however wanted to win and get what he wanted.

Contract signing was not he only difficulty that the yankees had. There were a few injuries that occured. BIll Skowron injured his wrist in 1959. This prevented him from playing. Mickey Mantle was having his own problems with fans. After on game while leaving the stadium, Mantle was punched by multiple fans which ended up giving Mantle a bruised jaw. He caught a flyball and before reaching the dugout the fans were already trying to grab his hat and uniform. he tried to walk away, but was blamed for hurting and pushing children on his way.

Besides all of the difficulties that the yankess had they were the best major league team. They had a great advantage because they had great players with very good skills. The yankees all together had a batting order that could wear down a picher. Roger Maris and MIckey Mantle both swing left handed and so does Yogi Berra who is a great long ball hitter. Elston Howard, Gil McDouglald, Bob Cerv and Hector Lopez all swing with their right, but with amazing strenght. Dale Long who was a pinch hitter had the advantage of being familiar with National Leagues in general. Especially the Pirates since he played wiht them up to 1957. Altogether the Yankees were a team with many great skills that could have won any game.

The Yankees were on fire making it to the world series against the Pirates. For most of the world series games the Yankees were crushing their opponent. However that changed in just one game. Mazeroski one unexpected player to be hero led the Pirates to their victory. Mazeroski, a player whowas to blame for the fourth place finish ofthe Pirates last season stepped up his game in 1960 and went back to being the slashing hitter that he was before. The Yankees outscored the Pirates 55-27, out hit them 91-60, out-batted them .338 to .256, but still lost. Mazeroski became the first players that hit a walk off home run which means that home run endeed the game. Even though the yankees were playing better than the Pirates, the PIrates got their victory with just one swing by Bill Mazeroski.

The 1960 season was not an easy year for the Yankees. They were a great team and could have won the world series if Mazeroski had not made that walk-off home run. This was one of the Yankees most dissapointing losses. After having played so well in the season to end up losing was very harsh. The Yankees were favored by many and to see them beat by one swing was dissapointing. Although the winniogn home run was very good, it was also unexpected.
